Breast Silicone

You can find everything you wonder about breast silicone surgery in the following questions-answers and explanations.

Before Surgery

What Should Be the Ideal Breast Appearance?

The breast is a very important part of the body visually as well as for its functional structure. The aesthetic appearance of the breasts is of great importance for the individual's self-acceptance and self-confidence. So, how should an aesthetically pleasing breast be?

In fact, the aesthetics of the female breast is roughly a formulated version of our general tastes that have formed until today, limited by various ratios. Breast structures that remain within these ratios are accepted as aesthetic by all of us. The aim of breast aesthetic surgery is actually to bring the breast, whose ratios and measurements are distorted, into these ratios and measurements.

In breast aesthetic procedures, surgeons must know their work and the results they will achieve well. Every woman's breast size and body ratio are different. Therefore, the geometry and mathematics of each woman's breast is a different problem and sufficient time must be allocated to the patient before the surgery to solve this problem. In my opinion, this is the trick to getting a good result from breast aesthetic surgery.

Is It Possible to Show Patients the New Appearance They Will Achieve After Surgery in Advance?

We surgeons may know the mathematical part of the business very well, but let's not forget that our patient in front of us is unaware of this. One of our duties is to correctly explain to the patient what is aimed with the surgery to be performed, what is possible and what is not. This is essential for the happiness of both parties after the surgery.

So, how can we explain what's in our heads to the patient in a way they will understand? Explaining the entire breast subject takes a lot of time. We can make simple drawings, show patients who have had surgery before, make an example by shaping the patient's own breast with our hands, and benefit from devices like Vectra 3d. But among all these options, the most satisfying one is for the patient to see and evaluate themselves in the mirror with sample size implants that we put inside ready-made sports bras.

What is Breast Augmentation?

Breast augmentation is the procedure performed to make the existing breast appearance larger and fuller.

Is It Possible to Augment Breasts Without Surgery?

Recently, some non-surgical breast augmentation procedures are performed with some injectable artificial fillers. However, the most correct and rational method is to perform breast augmentation surgery with silicone implants or fat filling.

  • How is Breast Silicone Surgery Performed?

Breast silicone surgery is a comfortable and safe surgery. It takes about an hour. To make the visible breast volume look larger, a silicone prosthesis (implant) is placed under the breast tissue. Many factors come into play in planning augmentation surgeries.

    * What type of breast prosthesis/implant will be used (water-content, silicone-content, round, teardrop, smooth surface, textured surface)

    * Where the breast prosthesis will be placed (submuscular, subglandular, subfascial)

    * From where the prosthesis will be placed in the breast (inframammary, periareolar, transaxillary)

Breast Prostheses Used in Breast Augmentation Surgery

There are hundreds of types of breast implants in different brands, structures, surface features, and shapes.

All breast implant brands are above certain minimum standards and are reliable. However, some are more prominent and have more brand awareness and trust index. Surgeons usually work for many years with a breast implant brand they are more satisfied with compared to others.

What Are the Types of Breast Silicone?

There are teardrop-shaped silicone prostheses and round-shaped silicone prostheses. Teardrop-shaped prostheses create a more natural growth. Round breast prostheses, on the other hand, provide growth with a more assertive appearance. Of course, the sizes of the silicone prostheses to be used here are also important. To create a normal or natural growth, it is necessary to choose a silicone prosthesis that will not exceed the dimensions of the original breast base. However, for a larger, assertive appearance, it may be necessary to push the existing anatomical limits a bit.

What is Inside the Silicone of the Breast Prosthesis?

When we look at the contents of breast implants, we see that there are water-content and silicone-structured breast implants. Our preference is for the use of silicone-structured breast prostheses. When we look at the usage and preferences in the world, we see that silicone-content breast prostheses are more common. The biggest reason for this is that water-content prostheses leak water over time and their internal volumetric fullness can decrease over time, and also water movement can sometimes be felt.

What is the Surface of Breast Prostheses (Silicone) Like?

Breast silicone prostheses can show different surface features. Here, prostheses are divided into two as textured (textured, micro-textured) or smooth surface. Prosthesis preference is made according to the surgeon's choice. Our common use is in favor of implants with textured surface features. Because the adhesion properties of prostheses with textured surfaces are better. In these prostheses, problems such as displacement or rotation in their place are observed less.

Who is Breast Silicone Surgery Suitable For, In Which Situations is it Performed?

Breast silicone surgery is suitable for people who do not have sufficient breast fullness visually in one or both breasts and who have no objection to receiving general anesthesia.

Is There an Age Limit for Breast Silicone Surgery?

While there are no sharp age limits for breast silicone surgery, people who will have surgery are expected to be at sufficient physical and mental maturity and have the ability to make decisions on their own.

If the patient who will have a breast prosthesis is over forty years old, radiological examinations such as mammography and ultrasonography are performed before the surgery.

How Long Does Breast Silicone Surgery Take?

Breast silicone surgery takes about 40 – 70 minutes.

After Surgery

Is it Necessary to Stay in the Hospital After Breast Augmentation Surgery?

One night stay is recommended. If the patient wishes, they can be discharged six hours after the operation on the same day.

  • What Should Those Who Have Breast Silicone Pay Attention to After the Operation?

    * After breast aesthetics, a protective bra must be used for three weeks.

    * Driving is not recommended in the days immediately after the surgery.

    * It is recommended to avoid intense physical activity for the first month.

    * The person should not lie face down for the first month.

    * Avoid taking a shower after surgery. A shower can be taken on the third day after surgery.

    * Staying away from wet or damp places such as swimming, sauna, and SPA for a while where hygiene cannot be assured is important to protect the operated area.

    * There may be touch sensitivity in the breasts for the first month. People should not worry about this situation.

Are Stitches Removed After Breast Silicone Surgery?

There is no stitch removal after breast silicone surgery. During the surgery, dissolving stitches are used.

How Long Does it Take for Those Who Have Breast Augmentation Surgery to Recover?

Recovery time is 2-3 days. However, the person who had the surgery should protect the breast area and act carefully for the first three weeks.

When Can One Start Work After Surgery?

If the person is not a professional athlete or does not do an active physical job, they can start work on the second or third day of the surgery.

Is Breast Silicone Surgery a Risky Operation?

Every surgery has general and its own specific risks. Breast silicone surgery is an operation with a short surgery time and results that are immediately apparent, which is quite comfortable for both the patient and the physician.

In breast augmentation surgery, since the augmentation of the breast can be provided with a foreign substance for the body, some problems related to the silicone prosthesis may rarely be experienced. Hardening and narrowing may occur due to the development of a membrane called a capsule around the silicone prosthesis. A thin membrane does not cause any problems, but if a medium-thick membrane forms, a slight hardness in the breasts and prominence at the breast base can be noticed.

If the body does not accept this foreign substance and a thick membrane forms around the prosthesis (contracted capsule), stiffness and asymmetry in the breasts can be seen. In cases of mild and moderate capsular contracture, external massage and, if necessary, additional surgeries are performed to eliminate the capsule around the prosthesis. When severe capsule contracture occurs, there is no option other than removing the prosthesis.

Are There Side Effects of Having Silicone?

Complaints of edema and pain in the breast area may be seen after surgery. Bleeding and infection due to surgery are rare situations. Some patients complain of increased or decreased sensitivity in the nipples or numbness around the incision after surgery. This is usually temporary.

What is the Lifespan of Breast Silicones?

We often encounter questions such as how long breast silicone lasts and when it is necessary to change breast silicone. In fact, if a breast prosthesis selected in sizes that will not strain the tissues was applied with good surgical techniques and if good protection was provided afterwards, it is not correct to assign a specific lifespan to these silicones. There can be uses lasting more than fifteen years, as well as situations where problems are experienced in a shorter time. The patient needs to have a check-up every five years after the surgery. You can contact us to reach more detailed information on this subject.

If it is Necessary to Change Breast Prostheses in the Future, is This a Difficult Procedure?

No, breast prosthesis replacement surgery is not a difficult procedure. The old prostheses are removed, the existing capsule and foreign tissues are cleaned, and the new prosthesis is placed. If deemed necessary, the location of the prosthesis is also changed.

Does Having Breast Silicone Correct the Sagging Appearance in the Breasts?

No, it does not. A silicone breast implant only provides fullness. It does not change the position of the nipple and the breast in general.

Is it Possible to Perform Augmentation on Breasts with Mild Sagging?

Yes, here the position of the nipple and the amount of sagging in the breast are important. Sometimes it may be necessary to perform a lift surgery along with the augmentation surgery.

Can Breast Lift Surgery and Breast Silicone Surgery Be Performed at the Same Time?

Yes, breast silicone and breast lift surgeries can be applied on their own as well as together.

Is it Possible to Have Silicone and Maintain the Natural Appearance of the Breasts?

Yes, it is possible. Extremely natural breasts can be made with new model, new surfaced, and specially consistent anatomical (teardrop-shaped) silicone implants that are both felt by touch and visually apparent.

Is Silicone Understandable from the Outside?

No, if an implant of a very assertive size was not placed, it is not possible to understand it by looking from the outside.

Can the Silicone Prosthesis Be Felt by Hand?

Only in thin patients and patients where large implants are used, it can be slightly felt if one wants to touch the prosthesis towards the midline or the armpit. However, it is not possible to feel the silicone implant in general contact.

Is it Possible to Have the Installed Silicone Removed?

Yes, it is possible to remove or change the installed silicone.

Should Those with a Family History of Breast Cancer Avoid Having Silicone?

Silicones have no effect on breast cancer. They do not decrease or increase the risk of cancer.

If One Breast is Large and the Other is Small, Can Silicone Be Installed in a Single Breast?

It can be. But in these types of cases, usually other procedures may also be required. Breast asymmetry correction is another topic heading.

Can One Enter the Sea After Breast Augmentation Surgery?

The person who had surgery can start entering the sea three weeks later.

Can Breast Implants Be Done in Summer?

Yes, surgery can also be performed in summer.

Does Having Silicone Prevent Doing Sports?

No, especially subglandular-subfascial placed breast prostheses definitely do not prevent you from doing sports. Here, of course, the breast prosthesis sizes to be selected are also important. Small-medium size prostheses will be more sporty.

Does Having Breast Silicone Prevent Breastfeeding in the Future?

Breast augmentation surgery technically and theoretically does not prevent milk secretion.

If a Person's Nipple is Inverted, Does This Situation Improve After Breast Augmentation Surgery?

After breast augmentation surgeries, usually nipples that are not very inverted come out and look more normal. However, if this situation is not sufficient, the procedure of bringing the nipple out can also be performed at the same time.

Where Will the Scar Be After Having Breast Silicone?

The final scar can be placed in the armpit, nipple, or under the breast according to the entry site. In all of them, quite good healing occurs and they become almost indistinct over time. The scar is at most 5 cm long.

Does Breast Silicone Explode?

No. Silicone implants do not have an energy accumulation that would cause an explosion. You cannot cause an explosion by squeezing either. However, over time, breaks in the outer shell may occur due to folding and bending. These are rare situations. Although the outer surface of silicone prostheses is very thin, they are quite resistant to external impacts.

Do Prostheses Tear?

Tearing of the prosthesis is a rare condition, it can occur with squeezing as in in-car traffic accidents, falls from height, and penetrating object injuries.

Will There Be a Problem in Breast Examination or Surgery After Having Breast Silicone?

The silicone prosthesis does not pose a problem for subsequent mammography imaging and surgical procedures. The silicone prosthesis is seen as a space in mammography. When surgery is required due to any discomfort, standard procedures are applied.
