Excessive breast enlargement in men is called gynecomastia. There are two main reasons for this appearance. There may be an increase in fat tissue or there may be enlargement in the breast gland.
In cases of weight gain or various hormonal disorders, there may be an increase in breast fat tissue. This situation can cause breast enlargement in men. Breast enlargement due to fat increase can generally be solved by performing a liposuction fat removal procedure. In gynecomastia due to enlargement in the breast gland, the breast gland, which should be present in very small amounts in men, grows excessively. This situation mostly occurs during the puberty stage and in advanced age. Gynecomastia seen during puberty often returns to its former state, but sometimes it may not. It is a common approach to wait for a period like 2 years for gynecomastia that occurs during puberty. Breast enlargement in men can also occur at any age due to liver diseases, excessive alcohol consumption, and some drugs used.
While the solution for excessive lubrication is liposuction, in true gynecomastia, the breast gland is removed with an open technique. In the open technique, the procedure is performed with a half-moon incision made around the nipple. Both operations are short one-hour procedures, and can be applied under sedation and local anesthesia in operating room conditions.
The patient can be discharged on the same day. 3 days of home rest is sufficient. Dissolving stitches are used. There is no need for stitch removal. Heavy exercises are prohibited for 1 month. Using a chest corset for 2 weeks is sufficient.
